The news is out -- CBD is beneficial for dogs. Your fur baby can enjoy all the health benefits of CBD just like you. CBD products for dogs are quickly becoming a go-to medication for dog owners and even veterinarians.

But, is it safe? There are only preliminary studies that say it is.  In a 2018 study on CBD's effects on osteoarthritic dogs, research determined that 2 mg/kg of CBD is the right dose for easing pain and discomfort.. It's hypothesized that if CBD is safe for humans, then it’s safe for dogs. This theory, now backed by research, proves that both humans and dogs (and other species that have vertebrae) have an endocannabinoid system in their bodies. Additionally, there’s evidence that CBD binds to endocannabinoid receptors in the body to benefit it in countless ways.

What is CBD?

A chemical compound found in cannabis (marijuana or hemp), CBD is different than THC. The difference is the effect, where CBD doesn’t cause the “high” that THC does. Knowing this is essential since THC is toxic to dogs.

A phytocannabinoid, CBD, or cannabidiol, was first discovered in 1940 in the marijuana plant. Today, CBD is widely accepted throughout the world. Society has accepted it so much that it was federally legalized in the United States in December 2018 with the enactment of the Farm Bill. The Farm Bill removed CBD from the federal list of controlled substances and classified it as an agricultural asset.

What are the Benefits of Giving Your Dog CBD?

Dogs suffer from many of the same health conditions as humans. Since dogs have the same endocannabinoid system as humans, it’s indicated that CBD can treat the same health conditions. These are:

Inflammation

It’s well-known that CBD helps reduce inflammation in humans. By reducing inflammation, CBD also decreases pain. CBD is an excellent source of pain relief.

Epilepsy

In a 2019 trial, there was a 33 percent decrease in seizure activity in epileptic dogs that were given CBD. Human studies also reveal similar results.

Fearfulness

Fearfulness goes hand-in-hand with anxiety, and it's proven that CBD helps reduce anxiety in humans.

Spasms

In humans with multiple sclerosis, a 2018 trial indicates that CBD can help decrease symptoms, such as spasms.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

In a 2019 study, it was indicated that CBD is an effective treatment for patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritic pain is reduced, and patients can have a better quality of life.

Anxiety

In a 2015 study, research indicates that CBD is effective at treating anxiety disorders in humans.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

By reducing inflammation in the digestive and intestinal tracts, IBS in dogs, like humans, can be treated effectively with CBD.

Pain

In 2020, a study showed a balanced approach to using CBD as a treatment for pain.

Cancer

One of the most promising benefits of CBD is its effects on cancer. Some studies indicate that CBD can kill cancer cells. And, it’s well-known that CBD can help decrease nausea associated with chemotherapy.

Nausea

In a 2011 trial, it was shown that CBD is effective as a treatment for nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is another common health condition in humans that CBD treats effectively. As early as 2004, a study proved that cannabinoids, such as CBD, can reduce pressure and pain in the eyes.

Skin Problems

Research in 2019 indicated that CBD is effective for the treatment of skin disorders, thus improving the quality of life for patients.

How to Buy CBD for Your Dog

CBD for dogs is a little different than CBD for humans. When buying CBD for your dog, be sure to check the COA, or Certificate of Authenticity. The COA will show the ingredients in the CBD. For example, how much THC is in the product. This is especially important as dogs can’t have THC. When looking for a CBD dog treat or product, check to make sure there is less than 0.3 percent THC in it. Look for CBD dog treats and products that are CBD-isolate, meaning they only contain CBD.

Before you go out and buy CBD for your dog, be sure to talk to your veterinarian. With his knowledge of your dog’s medical condition and what medications he takes, your vet can recommend what is right for your pooch.

Although there’s controversy surrounding the idea that CBD is safe for dogs, some studies indicate that it is. Multiple human studies prove CBD is a safe and effective treatment for many health conditions. Knowing which kind of CBD to buy for your dog is essential to his overall health. Be sure to check the label for THC content, always being sure there is little or no THC in the CBD product. The CBD products you use for your dog should only be for dogs. Dogs can't use CBD for humans, as it has more THC than dogs can handle.
