We’re heading into week 5 of the NFL season and you’ve gotten back into the football fever schedule. No matter which team you’re rooting for, you probably have some awesome snacks ready each Sunday, don’t you?
Have you also noticed your faithful dog eyeing your snacks the whole time? He or she just wants to be included too!
Luckily some common game day snacks are perfect for your dog and your guests. Most without any changes necessary.
Including Your Dog in Game Day
We all know dogs are social animals, and that includes parties and gatherings. They can sense the excitement, even though they don’t understand why were yelling at the fake people on the TV, they still want to join in.
Part of the excitement always seems to revolve around food, it’s not much of a surprise when your dog wants some. But many human foods are either not good for dogs or downright bad for them.
So, what can you do to let your dog know they are a part of the day without comprising their health? Make delicious snacks that are dog-friendly of course!
Popular Game Day Snacks That Are Dog Safe Too
All the snacks I’ve compiled are easy to make, and they use ingredients that are good for both humans and dogs. Win – Win.
Just remember to keep the portions small, and don’t add any salt, sugar, or spices that might upset your dog’s stomach.
Deviled Eggs (Dog Friendly Version)
My personal favorite, and almost always at the top of my list. Deviled Eggs.
Although eggs themselves are great for dogs, the standard version of deviled eggs is not good for them so it will need some changes. The paprika and mustard usually put on deviled eggs are toxic to dogs, instead substitute plain yogurt. The rest of the recipe can stay the same or you can add some shredded chicken to spruce it up. Chopped parsley is also a good idea for extra flavor if you’ll be eating them too.
Or you can just make two batches, one for you and one for your dog. I’m sure your pup would appreciate it.
Pigs in a Blanket
Another game day favorite snack is pigs in a blanket. There are only two ingredients, mini hot dogs/sausages and crescent roll dough. Neither of which are harmful or toxic to dogs.
You can use turkey or chicken sausage if you want a version that is lower in fat and sodium.
Crispy Baked Potato Bites
Now this one is a little less common but absolutely delicious.
Potatoes are a staple of game day snacks, but they’re usually fried or loaded with cheese and bacon. These crispy baked potato bites are a healthier alternative that are still satisfying and delicious. They’re also really easy to make.
To make crispy baked potato bites, you’ll need:
- potatoes
- olive oil
- egg wash
- panko breadcrumbs
- Cooking spray
To prepare them, follow these steps:
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) and spray a baking sheet with cooking spray.
- Peel the skin off the potatoes and boil them for 10 minutes, then let them cool.
- Rinse the potatoes with cold water and then dry the potatoes, and cut them into bite-sized pieces.
- In a large bowl, coat the potatoes with an egg wash and then coat in panko breadcrumbs.
- Spread them on the prepared baking sheet in a single layer.
- Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, flipping halfway, or until crisp and golden.
- Let them cool slightly before serving.
Celery and Peanut Butter
About as simple as it gets. Celery and peanut butter is a classic snack that is also good for both you and your dog.
Simply spread some peanut butter in the open side of each celery stalk and your done.
Or you can dip the celery in peanut butter, but your dog’s lack of opposable thumbs will make that difficult.
Just make sure to use natural peanut butter that doesn’t contain any added sugar, salt, or artificial ingredients.
Sliders (Pork or Beef)
Usually whoever brings the sliders is a fan favorite. They are tasty and it’s hard to eat just one.
You can use whatever meat you want like ham, pork, or if you want to get real fancy… sliced ribeye/prime rib.
You can use whole wheat rolls if you want to make them a bit healthier, but whatever the case it is a lot of bread, so you need to moderate how much your dog has.
Just make sure you skip any ketchup, mustard, and garlic if your dog is going to have some. Depending on the style you are making some or none of these even apply.
Things to Avoid When Preparing Snacks Your Dog Might Eat
While these game day snacks are safe and tasty for you and your dog, there are some things you should avoid when preparing any snacks your dog might eat. These include:
- Onion
- Garlic
- Grapes
- Raisins
- Nutmeg
- Chives
- Black Pepper
- Nuts
- Ketchup
- Mustard
All of these are either toxic or harmful to your furry friend, so keep them far away!
If you want to add some spices that your dog can safely eat you can use cinnamon or oregano. Both are safe and actually boast a number of health boosting properties for your pooch.
Cheer on Your Favorite Team with Your Dog By Your Side
With these game day snacks that are dog friendly, you can enjoy the game with your pup by your side. You don’t have to worry about leaving them out of the fun or giving them something they shouldn’t eat. You can further bond by sharing these dog-safe snacks with them while watching football (or whatever sport tickles your fancy).
Just remember to keep the portions small, and don’t add any extra salt, sugar, or spices that might upset your dog’s stomach. And of course, don’t forget to give them lots of love and attention.
Now you’ll just need a matching jersey for your dog and you’re all set!
So go ahead and cheer on your favorite team with your pup by your side. You’ll both have a great time!
