Chihuahuas are known to be one of the smallest dog breeds in the world. In the 1800s, these pint-sized dogs were re-discovered in the Chihuahua state of northern Mexico, which is how they got their name. For many centuries, they have been great companion dogs to humans. With big personalities packed in small bodies, Chihuahuas are great dogs for first time pet owners.
Many dog owners with allergies prefer Chihuahuas because they are mostly hypoallergenic dogs. A majority of urban or city dwellers also prefer these dainty-sized pups due to their size and energy level.
With elegant movements and a quick and steady gait, it’s no wonder why celebrities like Paris Hilton love this dog breed and carry these purse-sized pups everywhere they go.
Lower maintenance than other dog breeds
There are two Chihuahua types. The first type is the longhaired Chihuahua. The second type is the one you commonly see - the short-haired Chihuahua. A long haired Chihuahua has a long coat. The short-haired Chihuahua has a smooth coat. Within these two Chihuahua types, their coats come in a variety of colors. You’ve probably spotted this pup with the following coat colors: cream, red, white, tannish brown, and chocolate. Some may have markings, spots, masks, brindling or even tiger-like stripes.
If you have short and smooth coat Chihuahuas, they don’t require much maintenance or grooming needs. With a short coat Chi, you’ll only need to brush them once every few months. When it comes to bathing, simply bath them every few months. This will keep their smooth coat healthy and shiny.
If you have longer hair Chihuahuas, it is best to brush their coat every week in order to prevent matting and tangles.
Chihuahuas are generally healthy dog breeds. However, it is crucial to be cognizant of several health problems that they may face. For example, certain dog breeds such as Chihuahuas are more often prone to tracheal collapse. Although it can happen at any age, clinical signs mostly appear between 4 to 14 years of age. To prevent putting down your dogs early, it's important to be aware of this congenital abnormality. Early signs of tracheal collapse allows you to take appropriate steps sooner to help your dog deal with the symptoms.
Another health problem Chihuahuas may face is the genetic anomalies related to the heart. Make sure to visit your dog’s vet regularly to detect any problem early. Regular health tests such as cardiac exam, ophthalmologist evaluation, and a patella evaluation are recommended.
Can exercise indoors
Despite their size, Chihuahuas are high energy dogs. If you’re a first time pet owner, you will be happy to know that they won’t take up too much of your time and energy. Chihuahuas need approximately 20 to 30 minutes of daily exercise. Simply running from room to room or following their human owners around the house helps to expend their excess energy. Thus, Chihuahuas are great dogs for pet owners who have a busy schedule.
As you can see, this dog breed can expel its energy indoors without requiring you to head out of the house for exercise. Since they are small, even a small house or apartment is enough space for them to roam around freely. This means you won’t need to run with your dog out in the cold!
If you do prefer to go out for a walk with your Chihuahuas, a short walk around the block is enough to expend their energy.
At home, Chihuahuas are mellow dogs that can stay in one spot for hours. Our Chihuahua lays on her doggie bed for hours when I’m out to work or shopping for groceries.
Easy to train
It’s important to train your Chihuahuas when they are puppies. Training provides discipline and controls common issues such as barking, aggression, and resource guarding. The good news is that this dog breed is always ready to learn and they excel in obedience training. They also love to please you. When you’re training your pint-sized pups, make sure to give plenty of positive reinforcements. They respond very well to positive training.
Not surprisingly, Chihuahuas respond very well when there are treats involved. Be aware of how much treats you’re giving them because it can affect their weight. Small dog breeds generally cannot support too much extra calories without packing on the pounds.
Be firm when you train your purse-sized dogs. Let them know that you are the one in charge. When training your Chihuahuas, introduce them to larger dogs. It’s crucial for your pups to socialize with other dogs. Doing so goes a long way when they’re adults. Social training is easiest when they are puppies.
Can travel with you anywhere
If your busy schedule requires you to travel frequently, you’ll be glad to know that Chihuahuas are portable dogs. With a height of 5 to 8 inches and weighing around 6.5 pounds, you can easily carry them in your bag anywhere you go. Thus, Chihuahuas are great traveling companions.
Chihuahuas, like terrier dogs, are very vocal. Make sure you provide proper obedience training when they are puppies. This way, they are well-mannered, enjoyable, and easy companions when you are traveling.
Companion dogs with long lifespans
According to American Kennel Club, dogs’ size affects their lifespan. Many researchers found that smaller dog breeds like Chihuahua tend to live longer than larger dog breeds.
Scientists found that every 4.4 pounds or 2 kg of body mass reduces a dog’s life expectancy by approximately one month. Since Chihuahuas weigh around 6.5 pounds, their life expectancy is usually around 14 to 16 years. Thus, pet owners of smaller dogs can expect to enjoy many years with their dogs.
There’s a Chihuahua for you
With big adorable eyes and cute shaped heads, there’s a Chihuahua for everyone. Some Chihuahuas have apple-shaped heads while others have deer-shaped heads. They are very loyal and will enjoy spending quality time with you. Owning this dog breed won’t flatten your wallet since they are affordable to feed due to their small size. Just make sure that they’re in households with older children who know how to handle and take care of small pets.
